Daniil Medvedev Wins First Grand Slam Title

Defeats Novak Djokovic in US Open Final

Medvedev becomes first Russian man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Marat Safin in 2005

Daniil Medvedev has won his first Grand Slam title, defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the US Open final on Sunday.

Medvedev, 25, is the first Russian man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Marat Safin in 2005. He is also the first player outside of the "Big Four" of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray to win a Grand Slam title since Juan Martin del Potro in 2009.

"It's an amazing feeling," Medvedev said after the match. "I've been working so hard for this, and it finally paid off."

Medvedev was in control of the match from the start, breaking Djokovic's serve in the first game. He held serve throughout the first set and broke Djokovic again in the seventh game of the second set to take a 5-2 lead.

Djokovic fought back to tie the second set at 5-5, but Medvedev broke him again in the 11th game to take the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Medvedev broke Djokovic's serve again in the first game of the third set and held serve throughout the set to win the match and the championship.

"Daniil played incredibly well today," Djokovic said. "He deserved to win."

With the victory, Medvedev moves up to No. 2 in the world rankings. He is now one of the favorites to win the Australian Open in January.
