Saint Ignatius of Loyola Remembered on Feast Day

The Founder of the Jesuits

Today the Catholic Church remembers Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. Ignatius, born Íñigo López de Loyola in 1491, is one of the most influential figures in the Catholic Counter-Reformation.

A Life of Transformation

Ignatius' conversion to Catholicism and his subsequent founding of the Jesuits came after a dramatic life transformation. In 1521, while defending the fortress at Pamplona, he was severely injured and had to recover for months. During his convalescence, he read the lives of the saints and experienced a profound religious awakening.

Legacy of the Jesuits

After his recovery, Ignatius established the Society of Jesus in 1540. The Jesuits, known for their scholarship, missionary work, and educational institutions, have played a significant role in the Catholic Church and in shaping Western culture.

A Lasting Impact

Ignatius' legacy continues to inspire countless people today. His teachings on spirituality, leadership, and the importance of discernment have influenced not only the Catholic Church but also the wider world. His feast day serves as a reminder of the profound impact he has had on the lives of so many.
